Credit Mutuel Arkea Confirms Cyberattack Amid Reports of Major Crypto Theft
The bank's confirmation came after blockchain investigator ZachXBT alleged that attackers had taken the funds and moved part of the proceeds through cryptocurrency platforms in an effort to conceal their origin.
Arkea did not verify the reported value of the stolen assets but maintained that the incident had not caused any financial losses for its customers.
According to ZachXBT, the cyberattack continued over several days, during which the perpetrators transferred funds through cryptocurrency exchanges and converted some of the assets into stablecoins. These digital currencies are designed to maintain a relatively stable value by being pegged to traditional currencies, including the US dollar.
The investigator also alleged that delays in notifying the relevant authorities enabled the hackers to launder more than $30 million. He argued that earlier intervention could have allowed European authorities to freeze those funds before they were moved through cryptocurrency networks.
Arkea said its security teams responded immediately after identifying the suspicious activity. As part of the response, the bank temporarily suspended certain transactions to protect its systems, secure its operations and prevent additional fraudulent transfers.
The financial institution said the situation had since been brought under control, although the precise scale of the reported theft remained unverified.
Headquartered in Brittany in western France, Credit Mutuel Arkea has not publicly confirmed the amount cited in the blockchain investigator’s findings. The reported losses therefore remain allegations rather than an independently established figure.
